How to Visit the Istanbul Tulip Festival (2024)
If you’re visiting Istanbul during the month of April, you definitely should make a stop to visit the Istanbul Tulip Festival. *As of April 3, 2024, I can confirm that they’re in bloom in Emirgan and looking lovely as ever, although it looks like some of the finishing touches may still be ongoing.

Each year in Istanbul, millions of bulbs in over 160 varieties of tulips are planted in parks around the city to celebrate the beginning of spring. The most famous of these is in Emirgan Park, up the Bosphorus:
Many people associate tulips with the Dutch, but they were actually exported there from Turkey during the time of the Ottoman Empire. You can see tulips on pottery and textile design going back centuries and you may even recognize the shape from the many tulip-shaped glasses of cay (tea) you’ll consume when you visit Turkey.

When is the Istanbul Tulip Festival for 2024?
The Istanbul Tulip Festival is an annual festival that runs from April 1-30th each year at various parks around Istanbul. Depending on the weather, you may see tulips blooming before or after the month of April, but in general April is the peak season for tulips in Istanbul.
Note: In 2024, Ramazan will be ending in the second week of April, so if you are trying to avoid crowds, it may actually be a nice time to visit – many families travel to visit relatives during the Seker Bayram which follows Ramazan so the city is often a bit quieter, especially on those days. That being said, it will be a week-long holiday so you can also expect lots of families to be enjoying the spring tulips this year. The good news is that all of the parks are quite large and spacious with many benches to enjoy or grassy areas to spread out.
How to get to the Istanbul Tulip Festival in 2024?
To get to Emirgan Park, you can easily catch a bus along the sea road from Besiktas or Taksim, or take the metro to 4. Levent and catch a bus from there. I recommend using the app called Moovit that can estimate price and give you routing options for using public transportation in Istanbul.
But my absolute favorite way to reach Emirgan is by ferry! Sehir Hatlari has the Eminonu-Rumeli Kavagi ferry which runs daily and stops at Emirgan. You can catch in Eminonu or Besiktas (and other stops along the way), which lands within walking distance of Emirgan park. If the ferry times fit with your schedule, you can use this to avoid getting stuck in Istanbul traffic and to get a mini Bosphorus cruise at the same time. This year, I caught the ferry from Kadikoy first and enjoyed more than an hour on the Bosphorus, looking for dolphins along the way and enjoying the view. =)
Emirgan is also home to the Istanbul Tulip Museum, which is a nice additional stop if you’re visiting the tulip festival. In 2024, the museum has an exhibit entitled Tulipomania running from April 1-14, 2024. It features 200 works by 55 artists and includes such an interesting mix of styles and mediums. To reach the museum, take the road that runs uphill to the left before you enter Emirgan Park’s main entrance at the bottom of the hill (past the playground.)
Is there an entry fee for the Istanbul Tulip Festival?
The event is free and open to the public. I’d recommend packing along a little snack or purchasing one from vendors near the park and enjoying a picnic with a view of the grounds and the Bosphorus. If you’re there at sunset, there are also beautiful views of the bridges lit up near the water.
Where else can I view the tulips in Istanbul?
If Emirgan is too far you can also check out the tulips in parks like Gulhane Park just outside of Topkapi Palace or Goztepe Park in Kadikoy on the Asian side of the city. I’ve really enjoyed both and try to visit at least one every year. It’s really amazing to see the variety of colors and the landscaped designs.
For the past few years, they’ve also put up the world’s largest carpet of tulips in Sultanahmet just outside the entrance to the Hagia Sofia.
