Sprawl
Shadows growing long
Palm trees rising like dots against the horizon
As the California sun drips into the sea
Cars going round the freeway clovers
Orderly stops at each entrance
Concrete baking in the sun
A thousand blue pools shining
Like turquoise jewels
In the midst of the arid grid below
Miniature suburban universes
Like rows of monopoly pieces
A flock of birds in search of trees
So rare among the sprawl
Where will they go?
The familiar scent of jet fuel
And stale cabin air
Envelop me in my restlessness
As we near touch down
Life goes on below
Even as mine seems so up in the air
Love!
